Life at UMYou don't need to be fluent, but knowing a few phrases goes a long way with locals:
Malaysia is one of the best food countries in the world — and it's incredibly affordable.
KL is hot and humid year-round (30–35°C during the day). Rain is frequent and often sudden, especially in the afternoon. Always carry an umbrella or raincoat. Dress light — cotton and breathable fabrics are your friend. Modest clothing is appreciated in more traditional areas and when visiting mosques. Bring a light jacket for air-conditioned lecture halls and malls, which can be freezing.
Get a local prepaid SIM as soon as you arrive. Major providers are Maxis (Hotlink), Celcom, Digi, and U Mobile. You can buy them at the airport, convenience stores, or phone shops. Most offer monthly data plans ranging from RM30–RM50 for 15–40 GB of data. You'll need your passport to register a SIM. WiFi is available on campus but can be unreliable during peak hours.
