Life at UMMost international students open an account with either CIMB or Maybank — both have branches on or very near campus. Some faculties or the International Student Centre may organise group trips to the bank during orientation week. Having a local account makes paying rent, receiving scholarships, and daily spending much easier.

Licensed money changers in malls and shopping centres usually offer much better rates than banks or the airport. Popular spots near UM include Mid Valley Megamall and Nu Sentral. Compare rates between a few changers before exchanging — they're often right next to each other. Avoid exchanging large amounts at the airport when you arrive (the rates are the worst). Just exchange enough for a Grab ride and your first meal, then find a better changer in town.
