Universiti Malaya: The First 48 Hours Survival Checklist
Welcome to Universiti Malaya (UM). As an international student, your first 48 hours in Kuala Lumpur are critical for establishing your legal residency and ensuring a smooth transition.
1. Arrival Phase: Airport & Initial Transport (Hours 0–6)
Welcome to Malaysia. Your academic journey begins the moment you clear immigration. Your immediate priority is organizing your “Document Readiness” kit.

- Navigating to Campus: Ensure you have secured transport from the airport (KLIA/KLIA2) directly to Universiti Malaya campus or your pre-arranged accommodation.
2. Connectivity Phase: Digital & Mobile Setup (Hours 6–12)
Establishing your digital presence is a legal necessity. You must distinguish between your university-level portal and the national-level visa tracking system.
University Portal Verification
- MAYA Portal: Log in to verify that your eVAL documents and payments have been successfully transferred from UM to EMGS.
- Manual Delay Warning: The transfer of data between the MAYA Portal and EMGS is currently a manual process. Human error or technical lag can occur. If your status remains stagnant for more than 3 working days, refer to the support channels.
3. Financial Readiness: E-PAY @UM & Personal Bond (Hours 12–24)
Administrative fees must be settled via the university's official payment gateway. Accuracy in selecting item names is required to avoid refund delays.

4. Health & Safety: Medical Insurance Activation (Hours 24–36)
Your health coverage is provided by The Pacific Insurance Berhad and managed by e-MAS (Eximius Medical Administration Solutions).
Accessing Healthcare & The Letter of Guarantee (GL)
To utilize “cashless” facilities at Panel Private Hospitals or GP Clinics, follow the formal Pre-Authorisation process:
- Obtain Digital ID: Access your Medical Card/Digital ID for verification (note: this is not a payment card).
- Request a Letter of Guarantee (GL): For scheduled hospital visits, arrange a GL 1 to 2 days in advance.
- Mechanism: Instruct the hospital to fax a Pre-Authorisation Form (PAF) directly to e-MAS. Once e-MAS issues the GL to the hospital, your admission can proceed.
- Presentation: Present your Passport and Medical Card at the counter.
Financial Responsibility & Deductibles
- The Deductible: Under Plan EMGS200, a RM25.00 deductible applies to every outpatient visit or hospital disability. You must pay the first RM25.00; the insurer covers the remaining eligible balance.
- Exclusions: Insurance does not cover “comfort items” (admission kits, extra meals) or Chronic Illnesses including Asthma, Diabetes, High Blood Pressure, Hepatitis B/C, and Nerve Disorders.
5. Administrative Phase: Banking & Visa Finalization (Hours 36–48)
The final phase involves securing your legal stay and financial independence in Malaysia.
Visa Clearance & Passport Submission
⚠ CRITICAL DEADLINE: Your current entry pass must have at least 10 working days of validity remaining at the time of passport submission. If your pass has less than 10 working days remaining, you will be hit with a mandatory RM154.00 penalty and be required to apply for a Special Pass. Do not delay this step.
Bank Account Opening
To open a local bank account, you must provide verification from the university:
- Student Verification Letter: Request this via epay.um.edu.my. Select the “International Agency” category to ensure the document meets banking compliance standards.
- Supporting Docs: Carry a copy of your eVAL and your Original Passport.
