From Lost to Belonging at UM
April 2, 2026
Starting my journey at UM as an international student was both exciting and overwhelming. Like many newcomers, I arrived with curiosity and anticipation, but I was not fully prepared for how challenging it would feel to navigate such a large and unfamiliar campus.
Surrounded by lush greenery and long, winding roads, the university felt almost like a small city. The air was warm and humid, and the sounds of buses, footsteps, and conversations filled the space. Yet, despite this lively environment, I often felt lost. As someone who does not speak and read Bahasa Melayu, even reading signboards became a challenge. Many buildings’ names were unfamiliar to me, and I frequently found myself pausing, unsure if I was heading in the right direction.
On my first day of the class, I couldn’t find the classroom where I was supposed to attend and have to request the professor for attending online class on that day. After that happened, I realised it matters a lot to know where the class located. During those first few days, I relied heavily on small tools to find my way. Downloading UM Touch was one of the most helpful decisions I made, as it allowed me to navigate bus routes and locate buildings more easily. At the same time, joining student communities on WhatsApp and Telegram connected me with others who were willing to share advice and answer questions. These platforms quickly became a source of reassurance.
However, what truly transformed my experience was connecting with people in everyday moments. Having meals with classmates at the campus cafeterias, walking together between lectures, and exploring different corners of the university helped me feel more at ease. The once unfamiliar environment gradually became more recognizable, and the sense of isolation began to fade.
Looking back, I realise that adjusting to a new university is not only about learning how to navigate physical spaces, but also about building connections and gaining confidence. The University of Malaya may seem overwhelming at first because of the size, but with time, patience, and support from the community, it becomes a place where you can truly find your sense of belonging.
